Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement with a network of over 75,000 club members in 122 countries.
Advocating for human rights and gender equality, at the heart of Soroptimist International advocacy is its work across six UN Centres,
where our UN representives ensure that the voices of women and girls are heard.Our membership works on grassroots projects that help
women and girls achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in communities worldwide.

KATE WINS NATIONAL FINAL OF PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION:

National Finals of Public Speaking Competition

We are delighted to be hosting the National Finals of the Public Speaking Competition on
Saturday March 11th in St. Angelas National School, Castlebar.
We look forward to welcoming all the competitors and guests .

Tea Party - Meals on Wheels

SI Castlebar were delighted to organise, in conjunction with Castlebar Social Services Centre, our first Valentines Tea Dance in the Tennis Club.
It was a fantastic evening for the elderly of our community and indeed our own club and we raised a substantial amount of money for Meals on Wheels.
We look forward to working with Castlebar Social Services Centre in the future.

We were delighted to hand over a cheque for €6,500  to Mary Barry of the Castlebar Alzheimers Day Care Centre.
This was the proceeds of our Christmas Catwalk 2016.

SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL ROI COLLABORATE WITH DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AND EQUALITY

Soroptimist International ROI in conjunction with the Dept. of Justice and Equality held a survey recently in Castlebar
to gauge public awareness on the issue of Human Trafficking in Ireland and their understanding of common signs and
indicators that a person may be a victim. This survey was very important in helping create public awareness around this issue.

Bridge Night

Our annual Bridge Drive took place recently.  Proceeds go to our local Christmas Charities Fund.
A really enjoyable evening was had and we thank all participants for their support.

Evening in the Olive Tree

Our club had a great evening in a Mediterranean Restaurant "The Olive Tree" recently.

We chose to go here as part of our National Project. The owner of the restaurant Mustapha Aboubi is from Algeria and spoke to us about his own culture and moving to Ireland and settling into our community. Mustapha also gave a very informative talk on his own project "Human Appeal". He donated the proceeds of the night to Human Appeal Ireland. Thank you Mustapha for your hospitality and a wonderful evening


Membership Month

To mark Membership Month SI Castlebar had a stand in the local Bank of Ireland where people could talk to members and get leaflets and information
about our club and SI International. We really enjoyed it and thanks to all those to stopped by for a chat

Sarah wins National Public Speaking Competition:

Many congratulations to Sarah Armstrong who won the National Final of the Public Speaking Competition, held in the Mansion House recently.
This is a massive achievement  for Sarah from Scoil Muire agus Padraig, Swinford.
Congratulations also to Alice Forbes who also participated in the National Finals and who was a superb finalist.
We wish both girls the best of luck in the future and we were delighted to have both girls represent S.I Castlebar in this competition.
Many thanks to Therese Moran, our Public Speaking Convenor who put in a huge amount of work to ensure the smooth running of the event.

Public Speaking Competition

Congratulations to Alice Forbes (Westport) and Sarah Armstrong(Swinford) who won the Regional Finals of the Soroptimist Public Speaking Competition recently. They now advance to the National Finals which will be held in the Mansion House, Dublin on March5th.Best of luck girls.

Our annual Christmas Party for the patients of An Coilin took place recently and a very enjoyable time was had by patients, staff and members.


Public Speaking Competition 2015

FASHION SHOW A GREAT SUCCESS


SI Castlebar held our Annual Fundraiser -"Christmas Catwalk" Extravaganza recently in aid of the Mayo Rape Crisis Centre.
It was a great success -a night of food fashion and fun. The event was a sellout and the club would like to thank all of our sponsors and those
who donated spot and raffle prizes. Thanks to everybody who bought tickets to attend the event and who consistently support our club.

Princess Anne addressed over 1200 delegates about her work with "Save the Children" - a charity she has been patron of since 1970.
Her Royal Highness's work prompted President Kaunda of Zambia to nominate her for the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize.

Christmas Catwalk 2014

A wonderful night was had by all at the Christmas Catwalk last Friday night, when our club hosted a night of Fashion, Food and Fun to raise  funds for the Hospice
Building Fund and Rock Rose House ,Castlebar. Approx. 250 people attended the event and we thank each and every one of them for their continuing support for
our club. We also thank our very generous sponsors without whom this fundraiser would not have been possible.

This years Fashion Show Fundraiser takes place on Nov. 14th in Breaffy House Hotel. Proceeds to Rock Rose House and Mayo Roscommon Building Fund.

Bridge Night Fundraiser 2014

We are delighted with the success of our Joint North/South Conference last weekend and we thank  all the delegates who attended and who made the weekend so memorable. Thanks to our Guest Speakers , Senator Paddy Burke and to An Taoiseach Enda Kenny whose presence was much appreciated. We were also delighted International President Ann Garvie and Federation President Elect Jenny Vince were among our guests.

We as a club are very proud of Amy Crean who represented our region in the National Finals
of the Soroptimist Public Speaking competition. Amy was fantastic and delivered an inspirational
speech. Congratulations to Eimear Dooley who was the winner and we look forward to hearing her
once again at the North/South Conference in May

position at the Public Speaking Regional Final last Sunday. We wish her the best of luck in the national final on March 11th.

Christmas Party

What a wonderful evening we had with the patients and staff of "An Coilin" at the annual Christmas party we host for them. Many thanks to Ms. Deirdre Lee and the students of St. Josephs, Castlebar and Ms. Beirne Rowland and the students of Davitt College for providing some fabulous entertainment for the patients .

We also got the opportunity to present them with a beautiful piano.

Fashion Show a huge success

Many thanks to everybody who supported us in our "Christmas Catwalk" venture this weekend. It was a fantastic night of food, fashion and fun and all 250 guests had a great time. Thanks to all the local business' who supported us in so many different ways from raffle prizes and spot prizes to supplying props and decorations  and advice. Thanks also to Henry McGlade who supplied the music and kept our guests dancing until the early hours of the morning. All proceeds go to The Alzheimers Day Care Centre Castlebar and towards our Music for Mental Health Project.

Public Speaking

The winners of the S.I  Public Speaking Competition were Sarah Murphy representing Sacred Heart Secondary School, Westport and Amy Crean representing Mount St. Michael, Claremorris. They now go forward to the Regional Finals which will be held in Ennis on Sunday Feb. 9th. The reserve is Dearbhail McNamara also from the Sacred Heart ,Westport.

Congratulations to our own Noreen Walsh who has just returned from Newcastle-Gateshead where she recieved her chain of office as National President of Soroptimist Ireland. Congratulations also to Monica Joyce who is now National Secretary. We as a club are very proud of their achievement and send them our best wishes for the coming year.

Bridge Drive

Aras an Uachtarain

Our club was invited recently to visit Aras An Uachtarain to meet President Michael D. Higgins and his lovely wife Sabina. A very enjoyable and memorable day was had by all those who attended.

Summer Outing 2013

S.I Castlebar held its summer outing recently. Members cycled part of the Western Greenway which is a fantastic free walking and cycling trail which links Westport to Achill.  
It is the longest off-road walking and cycling experience in the country and offers fantastic views of Clew Bay and it's many islands.  The cycle was followed by  lunch in Newport House and thanks to Catherine and her staff who looked after us so well.

Coffee Morning

A Coffee Morning was held in the Tennis Club on May 11th. Members of our club made a huge selection of home made
products, cakes, scones etc. It was very enjoyable and there was also an opportunity to purchase books and bags. We
raised nearly €1,000 which will be used to fund our National Project ie providing music tuition to vunerable children. We
thank everybody who donated books/bags, baked cakes and who supported us by attending.

S.I Castlebar supports Music Programme in local school

S.I Castlebar is providing funding for music tuition and purchase of music equipment
for a group of second level students in Castlebar.This project is part of our National project which is Positive Mental Health.
National President Anne O'Driscoll was entertained recently by a group of students involved in the project.  The project which we have undertaked in
co-operation with Music Generation started in April and will run for six weeks.

National President Anne visits the West!

We were delighted to welcome National President Anne O'Driscoll to Mayo over the weekend of April 26th -28th. President Anne had a busy weekend starting on Friday morning with a visit to a local secondary school where S.I Castlebar is funding a music project. 15 members joined President Anne that evening for a delightful dinner hosted by National President Elect Noreen Walsh in her home. The following day President Anne joined members from Castlebar and Ballina clubs for golf at Enniscrone Golf Club. They were fortunate to have lovely weather on the day and as the photographs show, great fun. That evening President Anne joined members from both clubs for another lovely dinner in "Crockett's" by the River Moy.  We then made a quick dash back to Castlebar to attend a fundraising concert in aid of Our Lady's Hospital Crumlin in the Church of the Holy Rosary. President Anne returned home on Sunday and we would like to thank her for what was a very enjoyable and memorable visit.
