Programme Action

Activities (Programme Action)

Members of Castlebar SI are involved in a wide range of activities that support the ethos of Soroptimists International. These include Social and Economic Development, Education, Health, International Goodwill and Understanding, Human Rights ,The Status of Women and the Environment.

Examples of projects undertaken by the club in recent years includes the following:


Each year SI Castlebar runs a Public Speaking Competition for girls in the senior cycle of second level education. This competition has been very successful and local winners’ progress to regional and national finals.

We  donated an Interactive White Board to St.Anthony’s Special School, Castlebar.

On an international level we funded the education of a girl in Kenya.


We have been actively involved in fundraising for an MRI Scanner for our local hospital.

Over the last two years we have raised €5000 towards the new Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Mayo General Hospital.

We support our local Mayo Mental Health Service by providing Christmas gifts for service users and during the past two years we arranged a gala Christmas party for continuing care patients in An Coilin, Castlebar.

Economic and Social Development:

We have provided financial support to a number of local and international organisations, including Mayo Mountain Rescue, Ballyglass Lifeboat, Mayo Intercultural Action, Castlebar Rape Crisis Centre, Alzheimer’s units in Mayo and Sr Rose Kelly who does humanitarian work in Haiti.


Social Activities

Throughout the year our very active social committee organise a number of social events. These range from a day at the races, coffee mornings and club lunches to concerts, musicals and sponsored walks in our beautiful west of Ireland countryside. The club has established friendship links with SI Wigan,  and in 2011 with SI Ballinasloe. Members have enjoyed visits to Wigan and look forward to forming new friendships with members in Ballinasoe.
